3cx is the pbx solution.

I was having alot of trouble getting a freepbx server to register with my voip provider so I switched to 3cx and haven't looked back. It was easy to setup and registered without any issues. I wish they had a cheaper license to get some features working for us home users. Who knows, that may come in time.

1st impressions

Having used the 3cx voip softphone software over a long period after trying other various soft phone software when it came time to look at voip pabx software again, I started with Asterisk but coming from a mainly windows environ, I really didn't want to have to learn linux again. While the plugins for 3CX pabx may not be as numerous as for Trixbox, the ease of use far exceeds Trixbox. I'm mainly looking at using the pabx to interface voip ATAs at our remote offices to our main PABX which is a bit old and really doesn't handle voip well. The goal being virtual extensions off the main pabx. Make sure you download the manual as well!!!!

3CX free version

We installed 3CX on a low cost DELL PC running XP-Home edition, used for collecting general e-mail & other simple office tasks.

3CX runs unobtrusively in the background using very little PC resource.

Setup:
4x extension phones:
2x Grandstream BudgeTone 100
1x Sipura 3000 FXS port connected to old digital cordless
1x USB phone connected to an old PC running XP home

1x VoIP line (Gradwell)
1x PSTN line via FXO port of Sipura 3000

Installation was easy & straightforward, although the Sipura 3000 seemed somewhat tricky to set-up properly. 3CX document on how to setup Sipura 3000 does spell out how to do it, although it was not clear that the Authentication ID should be the same as the line number used in the 3CX setup i.e. 10000 in my case. A worked example would have made this idiot proof.

A simple answering attendant and voice mail is used to catch unanswered calls whilst on other calls or out of the office.

3CX has features that will allow future system expansion.

The writer has also shortlisted, evaluated and used:

VOIspeed - in 1995 - confusing to setup, early versions had problems.

AXON - v. good but IMS & IVM options are expensive. Serious confusion over version & license options - ended up buying 2 versions of both - no refund for mistake in buying wrong version. Problems in 1996, so stopped using AXON altogether until May 2007. Now IVM has reverted to demo mode because of downloaded upgrade (automatic?) IVM upgrade does not recognize license & now have to pay yet again!!

3CX - less than 24h after install - seems to be the one to use.
Straight-forward to setup & easy to use. No fuss!

Future enhancement might include:
A Power Wizard to automate the whole setup procedure for a system including configuration of all hardware devices. A sort of plug 'n play to make install completely idiot proof for people who have little or no knowledge of networks and IP addresses etc.

We use this in a small home office where most of the people are actually working out-doors most of the time. It is used to catch unanswered calls, to make outgoing calls using lower cost VoIP line, whilst enabling calls still to be received on the BT landline.

We are planning to add a SIP compliant VoIP to GSM bridge to enable our mobile phones to be used as extension phones from the 3CX.

Our people sell horse 24/7 and are taking sales calls on days off and late into the evening. 3CX together with the VoIP to GSM bridge, will in future allow us to better manage our calls so that people CAN have time off work without loosing those sales calls.

More Info

I am coming from a PBX manufacture here in the US. I no longer work for them. Let me tell you that your product will be in high demand here in the US. It needs a few basic features but that will come with time. I think this product will be the next big thing to hit the market. Stick with it! Tons of positive things to say about this product! Do you have a OAI interface to all 3rd parties to develop applications to be used with it? If so, how could I get my hands on a tool kit?
